ACL INJURY
An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury occurs when the ligament in the knee is stretched, partially torn, or completely torn. It’s one of the most common knee injuries, often happening during sports that involve sudden pivoting or cutting, like football, basketball, and soccer. ACL injuries can also be caused by work injuries or car accidents.
ACL injuries can be prevented by strengthening the muscles around the knee and practicing proper landing and movement techniques. Here are some key strategies:
Strengthening: Exercises like lunges and squats can build strength in the hips and thighs, which support the knees. Hamstring leans and calf raises can also help.
ACL injury treatments can be surgical or non-surgical, and depend on factors like the severity of the tear, activity level, and other knee injuries. Non-surgical treatments include:
R.I.C.E.: Rest, ice, compression, and elevation to promote healing
Bracing: A hinged brace can help stabilize the knee
