Whiplash Syndrome
🟠Whiplash is a neck injury due to forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck, like the cracking of a whip. Whiplash is commonly caused by rear-end car crashes. But whiplash also can result from sports accidents, physical abuse and other types of traumas, such as a fall.
🟣 Along with a complete health history and physical exam, tests for whiplash may include: X-ray. Electromagnetic energy beams make images of internal tissues, bones, and organs onto film. But many whiplash injuries include damage to soft tissue that can’t be seen on X-rays.A magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI) displays any potential damage to intervertebral discs and soft tissues, such as muscles, ligaments, and even the brain.Pain that radiates to nearby areas like your head, face, shoulder and back. Muscle spasms that make it hard to move or turn your head and neck. Physical signs of injury, including bruising, swelling and sensitivity to being touched around the injury.
🟤 Sometimes whiplash can cause one of the neck’s spinal nerve roots to become compressed or inflamed, which can lead to cervical radiculopathy symptoms of tingling, weakness, and/or numbness radiating down the shoulder, arm, hand, and/or fingers.
🔴 Management of whiplash injury should include:
1. Offering self-care advice and providing reassurance that symptoms are self-limiting.
2. Encouraging early return to usual activities and early mobilization and discouraging the use of soft collars.
3. Offering analgesia to relieve symptoms.
4. Considering referral to physiotherapy.
