liotibial (IT) band syndrome is a common overuse injury causing pain on the outside of the knee, often affecting runners and cyclists due to friction between the tight band and knee bone. It typically causes sharp, burning pain, swelling, or a snapping feeling. Treatment involves resting, icing, stretching, and strengthening hip/gluteal muscles.
Symptoms of IT Band Syndrome:
1. Pain on the outer side of the knee, which may radiate up the leg.
2. Pain that worsens during activities like running, cycling, or climbing stairs.
3. A “snapping,” popping, or burning sensation on the outside of the knee.
Slight swelling at the side of the knee.
4. Pain usually increases with the knee bent at a 30-degree angle.
Treatment and Recovery:
1. Initial Care: Resting from aggravating activities, icing the area (10-15 min), and using anti-inflammatory medication (e.g., ibuprofen).
2. Physical Therapy: Targeted exercises to stretch and strengthen the hips, glutes, and core.
Recovery Time: Most individuals recover within 6 weeks with proper conservative treatment.
3. Additional Options: Foam rolling, massage, and in rare cases, corticosteroid injections.
